BOOK REVIEW - "Ain't You Glad You Joined the Republicans - A Brief History of the GOP" by John Calvin Batchelor.

Bev Gillock says she loves history and the GOP so when she found this book at a garage sale for a buck she didn't hesitate to pick it up. She highly recommends it to anyone interested in the history of the Republican party. Bev says, "It is written with fresh wit and a keen sense of humor." Here is a partial review of the book from Publisher's
Weekly.

Whatever one's political persuasion, this breezy, hugely entertaining, opinionated chronicle of the Republican Party will nettle and provoke. Founded in 1854 by opponents of slavery, the party of Abraham Lincoln by 1897 had turned itself into a conservative arbiter that championed the liberty of the American marketplace, according to novelist Batchelor.
Yet the Republicans, he maintains, have consistently claimed an obligation to the values of the American people, whether in support of liberty, sound money, trust-busting, anticommunism or family values. Among the Republican presidents he particularly admires are fearless, progressive Theodore Roosevelt, Nixon (whose Watergate-triggered ouster Batchelor blames mostly on vengeful Democrats' partisan politics) and Reagan, whose massive military buildup and aggressive foreign policy hastened the USSR's collapse, in Batchelor's estimate. Contemporaneous political cartoons and illustrations, memorabilia and campaign songs and verses are woven into the colorful narrative.
Abraham Lincoln (February 12, 1809 – April 15, 1865) served as the 16th President of the United States from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. He successfully led his country through its greatest internal crisis, the American Civil War, preserving the Union and ending slavery.

Before his election in 1860 as the first Republican president, Lincoln had been a country lawyer, an Illinois state legislator, a member of the United States House of Representatives, and twice an unsuccessful candidate for election to the U.S. Senate. As an outspoken opponent of the expansion of slavery in the United States, Lincoln won the Republican Party nomination in 1860 and was elected president later that year.

QUESTION:
What was the most positive result of the “Cash for Clunkers" program?

ANSWER:
It took 95% of the Obama bumper stickers off the road.

DID YOU KNOW? Ohio has no fault absentee? Anyone can vote by absentee ballot for any reason (you no longer have to be out of town). Request an absentee ballot be mailed to you (there is a form you must fill out) or vote at the Board of Elections office up to 35 days in advance of any election.
